Book talk and signing at the 92Y.
Today the Borscht Belt is recalled through the nostalgic lens of summer swims, Saturday night dances and comedy performances. But, forgotten about and exhausted, much of its structural environment has been left to decay. Photographer Marisa Scheinfeld journeyed into the abandoned sites where resorts, hotels and bungalow colonies once boomed in the Catskill Mountains. As she details the history of the Borscht Belt’s rise, fall and impact, she shows us a contemporary view of the hotel and bungalow sites which have now become reclaimed by nature or vandalized or marked by paintball players and graffiti artists. Cornell University Press will release The Borscht Belt, which features essays by Stefan Kanfer and Jenna Weissman Joselit, on October 4, 2016.
